Creating, supporting, and fostering a culture of Sustainability for all Manitobans

Who We Are…

The Manitoba Education for Sustainable Development Working Group (MESDWG) is an active hub for interested parties to work together collaboratively to       create a culture of sustainability in Manitoba.  Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) means incorporating key sustainability issues into teaching, learning, and awareness  programs at school, work, and home.  This includes the balancing of environmental, economic, social, cultural, and political aspects of society.  ESD promotes participatory teaching and learning methods that motivate and empower all learners of all age groups and status to change their behaviour and take action towards a sustainable future.

What We Do…

The MESDWG brings together stakeholders to forge collaborations and create a culture for ESD in Manitoba.  This includes identifying the gaps, opportunities, and priorities for future sustainability initiatives throughout Manitoba.  In order to promote and create awareness of sustainability issues to Manitobans, the MESDWG will communicate with local, provincial, national and international organizations and coordinate and facilitate the delivery of ESD activities

How We Evolved…

Based upon the UNESCO Decade of Education for Sustainable Development framework and priorities, the MESDWG was established as a federal pilot project in 2005.  In February 2006, seven additional provinces/territories established their own ESD Working Groups with the intent to have ESD Working Groups in all provinces and territories in Canada.

What’s Up For The Future…

To pursue its sustainability objective to create a culture of sustainability within Manitoba beyond the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014), the MESDWG will continue to help forge collaborations, monitor and report on the progress of ESD in Manitoba, and help to coordinate and facilitate the delivery of sustainability activities.
